LEE-CHIN’S AIC PARTNERS WITH C-CAM TO SUPPORT FISHERMEN

Fishermen on Jamaica’s south coast from Hellshire to Old Harbour, were overjoyed to receive equipment funded by a $10 million donation from Michael Lee-Chin’s AIC, and distributed by the grass roots organization, the Caribbean Coastal Area Management Foundation (C-CAM). Starting at Hellshire Beach on Friday, March 7 and continuing towards the Old Harbour Bay region at different beaches on Saturday, March 8, several fishermen were provided with fishing wire.

The fishermen expressed their deep appreciation for the contribution organised by  the NCB Foundation.  “We want to thank Mr. Lee-Chin for thinking about us.  Since Hurricane Dean, most of us lost fishing equipment and this donation will help us greatly to return to the sea”, said one Hellshire fisherman and resident.

In a message to the fishermen, AIC Executive Chairman, Michael Lee-Chin, expressed his delight with the initiative and explained why he chose to fund this particular programme.  “After Hurricane Dean, we heard about the plight of these courageous fishermen who have so many families depending on them, and we at AIC were deeply moved,” he said.  “We were told about the excellent work being done by the Caribbean Coastal Area Management Foundation, led by Mr Peter Espeut and are happy to support their request for assistance for these hardworking fishermen.”

Mr Lee-Chin harked back to the early days in Portland when he watched his parents eke out a living for their family.  “I can fully sympathise with the challenges that humble Jamaicans face as they try to make life better for their children,” he said.  “Those of us who have the means are duty-bound to ensure that we help to empower others.      What is so amazing is the resilience of these fishermen who,  despite  the many setbacks  they have faced,  have persevered in thisdemanding and risky occupation.  They are a great example for others as they are not expecting a handout, but under these circumstances are accepting a hand-up.”

Mr Lee-Chin went on to encourage the fishermen to work together and as much as possible, to support the efforts of C-CAM.   “I am inspired by the work of C-CAM and its community approach to enhancing the environment and development in the Portland Bight area and to improve the standard of living of its residents.  I encourage other Jamaican organizations to support the work of C-CAM.”
